Classes That Build Critical Thinking Skills

As students mature, they need opportunities to exercise their mental powers and discernment. Instead of taking everything at face value, they begin to question, analyze, interpret, and evaluate. Employers and organizations value team members who can filter information, understand the nuances of a situation, and make sound judgments. While we hope students will think critically in all their classes at Mid-Metro Academy, some classes emphasize such skills..

(Teacher and suggested grade level follow course title.)

Student Senate (Dave Racer, 9-12)

Through drafting and presenting mock legislation, students dig into controversial subjects, propose solutions, and defend their choices. They play the role of senators as they interview witnesses, seek to persuade peers, and find ways to compromise.

Economics (Vicky Sandberg, 9-12)

This challenging high school course invites students to understand the wide range of factors that influence financial markets and monetary policy. Through readings, discussions, and simulations, they gain familiarity with microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Read! Think! Write! (Rebecca Hope, 9-12)

In this literature course, students read and respond to a variety of genres, themes, and characters. Through class discussions and small-group projects, they explore the nuances of the readings together to analyze, interpret, and form judgments about each week's assignment.

Logic (Dannette Lund, 9-12)

Applying classical principles of logic helps students evaluate arguments--whether those come to them from politicians, college professors, or peers. They also learn to make sound arguments that withstand the scrutiny of those they are seeking to persuade.

Contemporary Issues (Dave Racer, 9-12)

Today's teens are exposed to challenging ideas and issues that cause them to question their faith and the foundations of American culture.  This class helps students develop critical thinking, writing, and communication skills; increase in knowledge; and learn how to interpret current events. The goal is to help them make wise choices as engaged citizens.
