Prepare Your Student for Adult Life

One of your top goals as a homeschooling parent is to make sure your student has the skills necessary to live independently as an adult. Just taking classes in an in-person environment will help students gain valuable social skills. Beyond that, Mid-Metro Academy offers many classes that develop specific skills.

(Teacher and suggested age range follow the course title.)

Personal Finance (Ana Grace Plotts, 9-12)

Students learn about money management and topics like insurance, taxes, mortgages, charitable giving, and much more.

Culinary Arts (Becky Mahoney, 5-8 and 9-12) (Michelle Manke, 5-12, W3)

Students learn basic cooking and baking skills as they practice reading and following recipes. The high school course uses a textbook and has weekly cooking, reading, and worksheet assignments.

Acting (Julie Thoreen, 5-8, and Josh Cisewski, 7-12)

Acting classes build confidence, poise, and the ability to think on one's feet. Students also develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills as they grow in empathy. These skills help students succeed in personal, work, and social settings.

Gym & Fitness (Joe Eckes, 5-12)

Students will practice healthy habits of movement and exercise they can carry into adulthood. Playing team sports helps young people develop empathy, resilience, communication skills, and leadership.

Jiu Jitsu (Fall) and Self-Defense and Fitness (Spring) (Joe Eckes, 5-adult)

These classes help students (including parents who join) learn the Brazilian martial art that focuses on ground control and leverage. In addition to helping students use and develop their muscles, it provides a method of self-defense that engenders confidence and poise.

Minnesota Geo (Kay Kelly, 5-8)

As an adult, your student will need to know how to get around. Students in this class learn to read maps, follow a compass, and follow GPS directions. They may be rewarded as they use their geocaching skills to find a hidden treasure while on a hike in the neighborhood around the MMA campus.

Essential Computer Skills (Chris Paschen, 6-12, M1)

Even though young people are "digital natives," they can benefit from instruction in touch typing, protecting their privacy online, understanding and using Artificial Intelligence ethically, and using office software.
