Sheila McAlpine To All Instructors

Sheila is passionate about  both American Sign Language and cooking! In 1994, she graduated from the Culinary Arts Program at Hennepin Technical College with hopes of becoming a caterer. When her daughter Laken was born later that same year, Laken became Sheila's focus and cooking became a passion she shared with family and friends. She’s been making homemade pizza every Friday night for the past 10 years.

When Laken was 10 months old, Sheila and her husband found out she was profoundly deaf. Sheila immediately immersed herself in ASL. She was determined to learn what would be her daughter's first language. In 2008 she enrolled in the interpreter program at St. Paul Technical College. After successfully completing the American Sign Language Studies Certificate, and teaching ASL at 2 local homeschool co-ops, she knew that teaching was the route she was supposed to take. She has been teaching ASL to homeschool students since 2008. She is proud to note that some of her former students have gone on to become sign language interpreters.
